Health care professionals are just as lost as everyone else when dealing with people with disabilities.”

Step Up: Health Care for Everyone

Imagine you’ve arrived at your doctor’s office for your annual physical. Because your wheelchair does not fit through the office door, the doctor conducts the physical exam in the back of your van.

Imagine wanting to be proactive about your health by getting a mammogram. You learn that, because you’re a woman with quadriplegia, you cannot get a mammogram anywhere in Alberta.

Seems crazy, right? But stories like these happen every day. Right here in Alberta.

In 2011, ACCD completed a research project called Barrier-free Health and Medical Services in Alberta. We were surprised—and troubled—by the findings. We learned that many Albertans with disabilities find it difficult—if not impossible—to access basic health and medical services.

Clearly, the situation needs to change. It isn’t right that only some Albertans receive the health and medical services they need. We are encouraging provincial leaders, professional medical associations, and people with disabilities to work together to solve this problem. Join the growing number of Albertans who are standing up for barrier-free health and medical services. It’s the right thing to do.
